Translation, Technologies, and Inclusion: Workshops for Practitioners

In early June, the Summer School of Audiovisual Translation took place at the Department of Translation Studies FA CPU in Nitra. The Summer School of AVT included several workshops on dubbing, audiocommentary, and subtitling led by well-known experts.

The first day, Tuesday 1 June 2021 was dedicated to the SCRIPT AND DUBBING TRANSLATION module led entirely by Dr. Lucia Paulínyová from the Comenius University in Bratislava. The module was practically oriented on the translation of film and television scripts and adjustment of dialogue lists for dubbing.

Wednesday 2 June 2021 was dedicated to the ACCESSIBILITY OF CONTENT AND MEDIA SERVICES module. This module was split into two sections: the morning section was led by Dr. Emília Perez, head of the Department of Translation Studies FA CPU in Nitra, and explored accessibility as a important concept for thinking about culture, art, and communication, and subtitling for audiences with impaired hearing. The afternoon section was led by Dr. Francesca Raffi from the University of Macerata in Italy. She turned her attention to audiences with impaired sight and from it arising needs in (not only) art communication. She especially discussed the strategies for the creation of audiocommentary for live performances, and audiovisual works in television and cinema.

Thursday 3 June 2021 was opened by Dr. Emília Perez with a discussion on translation of subtitles and its various aspects. She was then followed in the afternoon by Dr. Alina Secara from the University of Vienna who introduced participants to the cloud subtitling software by ZOO DIGITAL.

In addition to the workshops, all participants could also view a discussions on copyright laws in AVT, and on the professional aspects of AVT translator's work. The discussions were prepared in association with the FA CPU Media Centre, chaired by Dr. Emília Perez, and included Mgr. Lucia Miklasová from LITA and the translator PhDr. Mirka Brezovská.
