On the translation of Slovak literature into German

On 7th April 2022, the renowned translator Mirko Kraetsch, who has been translating from Slovak and Czech into German for more than 20 years, visited the premises of the Faculty of Arts of CPU in Nitra. Mirko Kraetsch translates fiction, poetry, drama and publishes in prestigious German and Austrian publishing houses. In the discussion, he spoke with the successful Slovak author and translator Michal Hvorecký who is the most translated contemporary author into German, with most of his novels being translated by Mirko Kraetsch.

The discussion focused on mapping the state and perspectives of Slovak literature in German translation, the status of translators in the countries concerned, arousing great interest among colleagues and students, and we therefore believe that in the future, we will have another opportunity to welcome such a personality from the European translation landscape.

The event was organised by the Department of Translation Studies and the Department of German Studies, Faculty of Arts, CPU in Nitra in cooperation with the Goethe Institute in Bratislava, The Centre for Information on Literature and the Weltlesebühne Translation Association.
