Specialising in French and Romanian, doc. PhDr. Peter Kopecký, PhD., studied language teacher training at Comenius University in Bratislava (1978). He defended his rigorous thesis in Romanian comparative linguistics in 1980. He got his PhD in modern Romanian history at Masaryk University, Brno (1986). He got tenure at the FA CPU Nitra in 2010. He has always strived to merge history and mentality with social aspects of nations. He was a visiting lecturer at several foreign universities and went through two long-term internships in France, Romania and the USA. In 1997 – 2002 he was extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador of Slovakia to Romania. He has authored more than 80 publications (including two monographs, several studies, articles, reviews, dictionary entries, students' books and artistic and technical translations), many of which were published abroad. He mostly deals with French-Slovak legal terminology equivalence. He specialises in comparative French-Romanian-Slovak lexicology, lexicography, etymology and sociolinguistics. Diplomatic protocol and terminology come up in his work too. Since 1980 he has worked as a legal translator and interpreter. In 2011 he became a member of the executive committee of the Slovak Society of Translators of Scientific and Technical Literature. He is a fellow at the Interpreting Institute CPU Nitra, often presiding at examinations. In 2002, at the end of his diplomatic mission, the President of Romania awarded him the National Order of Merit for fostering national ties. In 2013 he was awarded the Rector's award for his publication Z mozaiky slovensko-rumunských vzťahov v 20. storočí (From the Mosaic of Slovak-Romanian Relations in the 20th Century).
