From 24th to 26th September 2018, the international conference Translation, Interpreting, and Culture: Old Dogmas, New Approaches was held at the Department of Translation Studies, Faculty of Arts, CPU in Nitra. The conference was a result of joint efforts of 4 faculties of Slovak universities providing translation and interpreting training (Faculty of Arts of CPU in Nitra, Faculty of Arts of the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, Faculty of Arts of Commenius University in Bratislava, Faculty of Arts of the University of Prešov), as well as the Institute of World Literature of Slovak Academy of Sciences in Bratislava). It was attended by more than 100 domestic and foreign guests from the United States, France, Italy, Romania, Turkey, India, and China. The main speakers were globally recognised translation scholars - prof. D. Gile, prof. E. Gentzler, and prof. A. Chesterman.

The rich three-day series of lectures included contributions and panel discussions devoted to current topics of translation studies, such as machine translation, interpreting, specialised, audiovisual or literary translation. Participants also had the opportunity to attend several workshops led by leading domestic or foreign theorists and practitioners of translation and interpreting. Students of the Department of Translation Studies also participated in the preparation of the conference, either as interpreters or volunteers.

We are very glad that the conference, but also the contributions, the presented research and, last but not least, thought-provoking discussions confirmed that the Department of Translation Studies of the Faculty of Arts (and Slovak Translatology) can keep up with the world translatology and at the same time, has something to offer. The conference is an output of the VEGA project no. 2/0200/15 Translation as a part of the history of cultural space II. Facts, phenomena and personalities of translation activities in the Slovak cultural space and the forms of their functioning in it and of the VEGA project no. 1/0551/16 Hybridity in language, text and translation.
