Students from the Department of Translation Studies took part in a workshop titled Translating Culture-specific References – The Eternal Dilemma of the Dubbing Translator. The event, organised on 17 October 2023 by doc Andrej Zahorák PhD, was led by the department’s alumni Mgr Anna Kompasová, who currently works as a dubbing translator and dialogue sheet editor. The workshop primarily focused on the translation of culture-specific terminology, and Mgr Kompasová introduced some of the most common translation strategies and approaches used in dubbing translation. Students gained an insight into the process of qualitative and quantitative editing of dubbing sheets, and had an opportunity to try out a section from an authentic sheet with culture-specific references.

We are delighted by the popularity of this workshop among students and hope they have gained interesting new skills in translating culture-specific terminology in audiovisual communication.
