From the Booth to the Field: The Interpreter's Task in the Refugee Crisis in Slovakia

The Department of Translation Studies organised on 8 November 2022 an event focusing on translation and interpreting in public service, which is becoming an increasingly discussed topic both in our department and in wider European contexts.

The event begun with a talk with Dr Žaneta Zsarnoczaiová, who experienced interpreting at the border with Ukraine during the first migrant wave as well as later in community centres. She talked about the specific challenges of interpreting in public service.

Doc. Soňa Hodáková subsequently introduced the newest activities taking place at the Department of Translation studies in interpreting and public service, which are a direct response to the current events and as well as a heightened demand for interpreters in public service.

Two more guests introduced some of the theoretic standpoints and direct experiences from interpreting praxis: Dr Eva Reichwalderová from the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica and doc. Markéta Štefková from Comenius University in Bratislava.
