Tradition and Innovation in Translation Studies Research IX: Translation in Time

On 10 and 11 February 2021 the Department of Translation Studies of the Faculty of Arts of Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra held the 9th year of the international scientific conference for PhD students and young scientists called “Tradition and Innovation in Translation Studies Research: Translation in Time”. Due to the pandemic situation, the conference was organised online opening the opportunity to participate not only to the attendees from Slovakia and nearby countries, but also from the more distant parts of the world. There was a tremendous interest in participating, as well as in being part of the audience.

The event was officially opened by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts of Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, doc Jarmila Maximová, PhD., followed by the Head of the Department of Translation Studies of FA CPU in Nitra, Mgr. Emília Perez PhD., who emphasised the long tradition of holding the conference which has been maintained with a brief break since 2010. She also recognised members of the organising committee for their work, as well as the members of the scientific committee consisting of the experts from translation studies institutions in Slovakia and around the world for guaranteeing the quality of the conference. Lastly Mária Koscelníková welcomed all the participants on behalf of the organising committee.

For the first time the conference was enriched with a keynote speaker lecture. This year, the keynote speaker was prof. ucz. dr hab. Agnieszka Szarkowska from Warsaw University in Poland. She talked about her beginnings in audiovisual translation research and shared a great deal of inspiration.

The aim of the conference was to reflect on the current trends in translation research, traditional approaches and methods. This year, the traditional research areas in translation studies as well as the research of translation areas unexplored so far were both examined through the lens of time.

During the two days of the conference, PhD students and young scientists introduced interesting topics in five sections. After the presentations in the respective sections, fruitful discussions developed, bringing interesting questions and offering thoughts and experience from the participants, audience, and the members of the scientific committee. Those interested could also participate in a quiz on translation studies using the kahoot.it platform. The reactions were very positive.

The participants took away from the conference interesting information, as well as new ideas, inspiration, and encouragement for their further work. We hope we will be able to welcome everyone again in person at our university during our tenth anniversary conference “Tradition and Innovation in Translation Studies X”.
