On 16 March 2021, the Department of Translation Studies, Faculty of Arts, CPU in Nitra opened its online gates and welcomed guests at the jubilee 10th year of Creative Reflections on Translation: Book, Film and Media in the New Decade.
This year, the event was untraditionally held in the online space, but with traditional quality. New, but also old-new faces came to the online premises of our Department, and the audience could look forward to a rich programme. The event was opened by the head of the Department of Translation Studies, Dr. Emília Perez, who talked about the beginnings and the birth of Creative Reflections on Translation, without which we can no longer imagine the summer semesters at our Department, and moderated by Dr. Andrej Zahorák.
The event started with a discussion between Dr. Perez and Dr. Eva Križková, director of the One World Film Festival, who introduced the origins and aim of the festival and explained to the audience how the preparation of such a festival looks like. The Department of Translation Studies cooperates with the One World Festival, which was confirmed by several of our students, who emphasised the importance of this festival.
The second part of the programme was devoted to the discussion of Dr. Zahorák and Vlasta Greschová, editor of the IKAR publishing house, where the audience learned not only about the editorial work, but also about the importance and role of the texts in the life of the translator and the editor. V. Greschová not only recommended high-quality Slovak books to the audience, but also revealed the behind-the-scenes of current publishing practices during the pandemic.
The last lecturer was a graduate of the Department of Translation Studies, Linda Magáthová. In her lecture I have a diploma, what’s next?, she provided participants, and especially students, with valuable advice on how to get engage into translation-oriented activities during and after their studies and how to start a successful translation and interpreting career. We believe that after this lecture, there was no longer an unmotivated participant at the event.
The event was attended by almost a hundred registered participants. We wish the Creative Reflections on Translation to their Jubilee many more successful years, guests and participants, and we believe that next year, we will be able to organise the event in its traditional full-time form.
