Four years have elapsed since the Department of Translation Studies became a member of the prestigious EMT network. This international framework for Europe’s best MA Translation Studies Programmes was founded by the European Commission Directorate-General for Translation, with the goal to support training of future European translators at the highest possible level as well as to support young language experts in finding their place in the job market.

November was a highly successful month for the Department of Translation Studies, and one of the most exciting news was the prize awarded by the European Commission Directorate-General to our student Bc Andrej Birčák for his results in the eMT challenge.

It is no secret that the world of film and audiovisual translation has become very popular at our Department, not only in terms of research but also training. Every year, future audiovisual translators from our Department benefit from a unique opportunity to test their skills in practice. The last time they did so was during the preparation of the last year of the popular international documentary film festival One World. They helped with the translation of subtitles, promotional materials, but also the creation of subtitles for audiences with hearing impairments. Several of our students and graduates, as well as by translators who regularly visit our Department as part of their ongoing education in audiovisual translation took advantage of this enriching opportunity.

It was in this spirit that a prestigious international meeting of members of the European Masters’ in Translation of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Translation took place on 20-21 October 2021 at the University of Leipzig.

Slovakia has been a member of the European Union since 2004, but even today, the functioning of various European institutions is for many people confusing, unclear or distant. In order to bring the legislative procedures and processes closer to younger people, an international simulation Model European Union Strasbourg (MEUS) has been held annually in the European Parliament in Strasbourg since 2007.

At the beginning of 2021, a consortium of European university and non-university workplaces applied for approval of a grant from the European Commission’s AMIF fund (Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund).
