Students of the Department of Translation Studies Participated in a Translation Project for the European Commission

The Department of Translation Studies, Faculty of Arts, CPU in Nitra, worked with the Slovak Unit of the Directorate- General for Translation of the European Commission on a project dedicated to the translation of selected problematic phrases, which are characteristic of institutional texts.

Nine first-year and second-year master’s students, who participated in the project, had the opportunity to try out translating texts that are actually translated in the European Union institutions. The students managed to create an extensive sample of interesting translation solutions, which will subsequently be incorporated into a terminology database so that Slovak translators in the European Commission can use them in their work. It is a project that allows students to adequately connect the acquired theoretical knowledge with the requirements of practice. We believe that the project has stimulated students’ interest in institutional translation and will motivate them to take part in other similar projects or possibly to apply for a translation traineeship in one of the institutions of the European Union.
